rs1837253 is a SNP found a bit upstream of the thymic stromal lymphopoietin TSLP gene on chromosome 5. The TSLP protein plays a role in inflammation of cells in the trachea and alveoli therefore may have a causative role in certain types of asthma. The rs1837253(T) allele has been found to reduce the risk of developing late-onset (adult) asthma in several studies, and it is recognized by the CPMC Study as one they report to their participants.

C;C

Found in 56% of all Caucasians on average, this genotype leads to a relative risk of 1.00, which is the most common risk, for late-onset (adult) asthma.

C;T

Found in 38% of all Caucasions, this genotype is associated with a reduced risk (relative risk = 0.84) for late-onset (adult) asthma.

T;T

Found in only 6% of all Caucasians, this genotype is associated with reduced risk (relative risk = 0.73) for late-onset (adult) asthma.
